Maya Angelou Academy K-5 Program & Building Blocks Therapeutic Preschool
Maya Angelou Academy is a non-public school (NPS) for grades K-5, which provides special education services to students with a variety of emotional, behavioral and/or social needs. We provide individualized attention and direct instruction in core areas in order to help our students make adequate yearly progress on their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals while adhering to a general education standards-based curriculum. The goal of our specialized services is to address the behavioral, emotional and developmental challenges of each student in order to prepare them for a less restrictive educational setting. At the same time we provide a rich learning environment to foster pre-academic thinking and growth.
The K-5 program operates year-round. The program hours are 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM (M/T/Th/F), and 8:30 AM to 1:15 PM (W).
Building Blocks Therapeutic Preschool is a year-round early intervention preschool program for children ages 3-5. Most of our students come to us with severe behavioral challenges, often caused by exposure to abuse, neglect, or other environmental factors that influence their social-emotional development. At Building Blocks we are dedicated to providing a safe, nurturing environment that supports each child’s particular strengths and challenges. Through the delivery of a thoughtful and developmentally appropriate curriculum our two preschool classrooms are designed to meet the individual needs of each student. In total, we serve 8 students between the ages and of 3 and 5. Children do not need an IEP to qualify for enrollment, but they do need to demonstrate a severe behavioral, social and/or emotional need that cannot be met in a typical preschool or child care setting. Each classroom is staffed by a certified preschool teacher, a therapist, and two mental health counselors trained to support students who have a variety of behavioral challenges.
The Preschool program hours are 8:45 AM to 1:00 PM.
